It's official!

Due to social distancing guidelines, the Maryville R2 School Board met via Zoom on April 15, 2020.

Highlights from the meeting include:

Superintendent Dr. Becky Albrecht highlighted all the district staff members who have gone above and beyond with regards to helping during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanks to teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, lunch staff, maintenance staff, administrators and the many others who are working tirelessly to keep “school” open for business.

Staff have been busy cleaning and disinfecting, completing regular building inspections, preparing an area at Eugene Field Elementary’s playground for the installation of new equipment, and replacing lockers and painting in the girls’ locker room at Maryville High School. As Dr. Albrecht said, we are keeping staff busy even though students aren’t physically in the building.

Jason Haer, Sean Wiedmaier and I were sworn in as school directors. Mr. Haer was elected school board president, and Mr. Wiedmaier was elected as vice president. Both will also serve as the state school board delegate and alternate.

The board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Northwest Technical School and Habitat for Humanity of Nodaway County Inc. for the next Building Projects house.

Assistant Superintendent Steve Klotz updated the board on the breakfast/lunch program. Due to the waiver the district received, the food program has been doing a bit better than breaking even so there is no deficit funding in that area. He also thanked Roger Bundridge and Northwest Cell for donating the use of 10 routers and data plans for families with internet scarcity so their children can participate in the district’s distance learning plan the remainder of the school year. Almost 170 Chromebooks have been checked out to students in grades fifth through twelve to use for distance learning. Those in fourth grade and below are receiving packets from their instructors.

Other discussions included possible graduation dates, summer school and the plan for students to return school property and to clean out their desks and lockers. The district will work with Nodaway County Health on the best course of action to accomplish that most effectively and safely.

All building reports are available online at https://simbli.eboardsolutions.com/SB_Meetings/ViewMeeting.aspx?S=338&MID=7348.

Highlights include:

- Kindergarten registration has been moved to online.
- Parents as Teachers participants have been meeting via Zoom.
- Special Education teachers have adjusted services to meet the needs of students who are learning from home.
- Eighth graders are registering virtually for next year’s classes. High school students submitted their course plans for next year as well.
